A meeting of minds brought about by a mutual fascination with birds in flight, results in this unlikely pairing of two artists from different regions, working in different mediums, and renowned for different genres of art.
Ingrid Uys and Tony Fredriksson present a striking combination of oil paintings and found wood sculpture, sparking an intriguing conversation between the artworks. The warmth of weathered wood contrasts against the cooler tones of oil on paper and canvas. Definitions of solidity, strength and fragility blur, as masculine and feminine energies merge.
The concept of wings allows each artist to consider themes of flight, faith and freedom. In a few of the artworks, wings imply an angelic presence. The concept of the heavenly is explored as for both artists, spirituality forms a strong foundation in their artistic practice. Both artists associate wings and flight with a sense of freedom, through their creative process as well as metaphorically. Despite seemingly obvious differences, the threads that weave the work of Ingrid and Tony together, makes for a stimulating exhibition.
