2024 Mozambican Artists’ Residency

Published 23 November 2024 in Artist Residencies

The week from the 18th to the 22nd of November, White River Gallery proudly hosted our second annual cyanotype residency. We welcomed Claudio Lucas Pola, Luísa Samuel, Ouri Pota Chapata Pacamutondo, Pinto José Zulo, and Zadoc José Nhacocome, winners of the Better Futures Awards hosted by Galeria Kulungwana in Maputo, for a week of creative exploration. Guided by master printmaker Cloudia Rivett-Carnac of Chocolate Ink Studios and director of The Printing Girls, the workshop provided a platform for these talented Mozambican artists to experiment with new techniques and connect with fellow creatives across borders.

Throughout the week, the artists immersed themselves in the cyanotype process—where sunlight reveals striking blue-and-white photographic prints—and explored Tetra Pak printmaking, an eco-friendly intaglio-inspired method that uses recycled cartons. These sustainable and innovative techniques sparked exciting artistic expressions and brought new dimensions to their practice:

The residency culminated in the opening of Visões Revelados (Revealed Visions), an exhibition held on Friday evening, 22 November. Henri Mittermeyer, CEO of Hollard Mozambique, opened the evening with heartfelt words, acknowledging the importance of initiatives like this in fostering artistic collaboration and cultural exchange. The emotions shared by the artists and participants reflected deep gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing how the residency has extended beyond borders and empowered Mozambique’s creative community.

We’re delighted to share that Visões Revelados will run alongside our year-end exhibition, Chrysalis, until the 2nd of February 2025. We encourage visitors to view the works created during the residency and celebrate the artistry on display. Be sure to take note of artworks marked with gold stickers—these will become part of Hollard Mozambique’s prestigious private collection, a significant accolade for the artists.

This year’s exhibition not only showcased the transformative works created during the residency but also served as a testament to the spirit of collaboration and creativity that underpins this unique project. We are honored to have been a part of this journey and to continue building meaningful connections between South African and Mozambican artists. The works will remain on display at White River Gallery until 2 February 2025, and we look forward to welcoming you to experience the power of art transcending borders.
