Reflecting on Leigh Voigt's Exhibition: The Allure of Our Arboreal Allies

This past Saturday, White River Gallery had the immense pleasure of opening Leigh Voigt's latest solo exhibition, The Allure of Our Arboreal Allies, presented in association with Everard Read. This preview was a rare and delightful opportunity for our local community to experience the remarkable works of one of South Africa's most cherished botanical artists before their official debut at Everard Read Johannesburg on Thursday, June 27th.

The Essence of Trees Captured in Art

Leigh Voigt's exhibition is a stunning celebration of the natural world, particularly the majesty of trees. Leigh, has devoted her life to studying and depicting the intricate beauty of trees. Her paintings capture the essence of these arboreal wonders, showcasing the unique atmosphere that each species brings to its landscape. From the intricate details of gnarled trunks to the dramatic interplay of light and shadow, Leigh's work is a testament to her deep understanding and appreciation of nature.

A Life Devoted to Art and Nature

Born in Johannesburg in 1943, Leigh Voigt is the daughter of the renowned botanical artist Barbara Jeppe. Leigh studied at the Johannesburg School of Art and initially worked in advertising before dedicating herself entirely to art. Her wildlife studies, known for their sensitivity and vibrant use of color, have made her a celebrated illustrator and artist. Leigh's work often focuses on the patterns that distinguish various animals, and her empathy for the creatures she portrays has made her illustrations highly sought after.

Leigh has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout South Africa and internationally, including the International Botanical Art Exhibition and the Wildlife Artists of the World exhibition at Everard Read Gallery. Her contributions to conservation through her art and her work with organizations such as the Endangered Wildlife Trust highlight her dedication to preserving the natural world.

A Triumph of Fine Painting

The Allure of Our Arboreal Allies showcases Leigh's lifelong reverence for trees and her exceptional talent as a painter. Mark Read of Everard Read Johannesburg eloquently describes Leigh's ability to juxtapose deep shade with blinding white light, capturing the profound character of trees. This exhibition is a testament to Leigh's skill in blending scientific scrutiny with artistic wonder, producing works that are both intellectually stimulating and visually captivating.

We were honored to welcome Stephanie Le Roy from Everard Read, who shared thoughts and words from Mark Read with our guests. This association between White River Gallery and Everard Read has allowed us to bring Leigh's extraordinary work to our local audience, celebrating her contributions to art and nature on home ground.
